Im seeing an increase in the number of atheists who argue against the simple concept of substitutionary atonement and seeing a lot of Christians struggle to answer it. I often see Christians try to defend the ethics of it by saying how beneficial for us that God allows for it. This seems to miss the point of the objections however that the system of substation should be permitted in the first place. This got me thinking. How much of the problem do you all think comes from the fact that we live in a modern individualistic culture? At one level I think Christians have become far to comfortable with that fact and no longer see covenant as Gods primary means of relating to his people. Do you think it would be more helpful if we as Christians realized that maybe God doesnt bless America and the west for our cultural framework? That God in the Bible seems to endorse of system of covenant and not personal autonomy? Im not sure how this can be resolved. At least in the American church I see so many Christians who would struggle with their faith if challenged that it was either God OR country rather than for God and country. Thoughts?
