Im sharing my inspirations on writing. Please let me know if any of you out there have had similar experiences. Thank you. Being a writer spirit and/or the Muses, probably both often prompt me to listen to certain types of music. A few weeks ago I went through a Jazz phase and out of that came a poem dedicated to Nina Simone. Today I was guided to listen to Ella Fitzgerald. Somehow by listening to their music I absorb their energies. Im able to capture a small portion of their eternal essence. Even though Im much too young to be their contemporaries a type of collective memory descends upon me. My parents, Aunts and Grandparents were products of the Big Band Era and I still remember many evenings sitting by the Victrola with my Mom (thats what she called record players, Victrolas) and listening to my parents precious 78s. Now I was not allowed to touch them because unlike 33 1/3s and 45s, 78s would break if dropped but like a sponge I absorbed everything and was transported back to the Make Believe Ballroom and Dancing at the Savoy. I find myself part of the Harlem Renaissance then Bebopping along to Dizzy Gillespie while moving into Mississippi God Damn with Nina Simone. I feel my ancestors as well as the music they listened to, the people they hung out with and the places they went. Sometimes Genetic Memory takes me even further back to my Naive American ancestors and I find myself at one with distant memories.
