Im sharing this because I believe in discussing all sides. Joseph Smith, golden plates in upstate New York? Ya. I was skeptical too. Until a friend said to me: Moses parting the Red Sea, Lots wife turning to salt, do you believe those things? Yes, I blurted, but those things are real. . My point is this: belief in any religion requires a suspension of what you know to be reality. Ya. You have to BELIEVE. You have to have faith--in whatever you believe in, no matter what you call it. Is the story of the golden plates true? . I dont know. I wasnt there. But my faith make me believe it is. And this I do know, because I have been there. The LDS church is kind, generous. It has helped millions of people in millions of ways. I am grateful for that. Lets just say Im an unorthodox Mormon, not much different from the way I was as a college student in Athens. My faith does not make me a different person. But it certainly makes me a better one. And that will be the last time I comment on this very personal issue. I hope I dont lose any of yall over this. That would be a shame.
