Im sharing this very important message re Cricket this week-end. Dear all, It goes without saying that yesterday was a tragic day for the whole Australian cricket community. I know I speak for everyone involved in the game when I express our utter devastation at the loss of Phillip Hughes. As communicated by James Sutherland yesterday, Cricket Australia recommends that club cricket (Grade/Premier and Community) continues as scheduled this weekend. At a time like this, it is important for the community to get together and Australia’s local cricket clubs provide an appropriate and fitting opportunity for that. We recommend that clubs pay their respect to Phillip - whether wearing a black arm band, having a moment’s silence after the toss or getting creative with his player number 408. Having said this, the final decision to play is ultimately the discretion of States and Territories and indeed local administrators, coaches and players. Administrators should develop a policy decision with respect to any proposals to abandon matches this weekend. A number of wonderful ideas have emerged to honour Phillip Hughes and the game of cricket which you may consider in your local cricket competitions. These ideas include extending Junior retirement rules to enable kids to bat past 50 and retire on 63no, reducing two day games to 63 overs each and encouraging both teams to spend a bit of extra time together reflecting on the great achievements he had in his young life and contribution he made to our game. (Phillip was 63no when the incident occured.) We have prepared an information sheet for sharing with Club coaches, team managers, MILO in2CRICKET and MILO T20 Blast coordinators to assist them in responding to any questions which may arise from players and/or parents. Click here to download the information sheet. Thank you for your commitment to celebrating the game of cricket this weekend and to remembering Phillip appropriately. Yours sincerely, ANDREW INGLETON Executive General Manager, Game & Market Development Cricket Australia
