Im shocked that the water crisis is used to bash the Labor Party - TopicsExpress

Im shocked that the water crisis is used to bash the Labor Party and the Labor councillors. One has to ask why? • It was the Labor councillors who put water issues on the council agenda. On September 24, I moved an urgency motion stating absolutely clearly that Broken Hill’s permanent water supply must continue to come from surface water and that the excessive outflow that occurred in December 2013 was not acceptable to the community. This motion was unanimously endorsed. • At the meeting of October 29 Labor again moved the following again as an urgency motion: “That Council requests a thorough review of the current ‘trigger point’ for NSW Government control of the lakes system. That Council calls on the State Government to immediately access the $300M allocated by the Federal Government to carry out agreed infrastructure works to improve the efficiency of the Menindee Lakes and to find means of accessing the currently inaccessible water in Lake Cawndilla. That Council calls on the State Government to acknowledge that the Menindee Lakes system is a vital asset for the on- going liveability , economic prosperity and recreational needs of Broken Hill and the Far West and it will continue to work with the community to ensure its long term viability and security. That any changes to the Menindee Lakes system or the implementation of emergency provisions are done at no additional or on-going cost to the Broken Hill community. That Council seek an urgent meeting with the MDBA” This was also supported by all councillors. • The meeting with a representative of the MDBA has now been held and the concerns of the Broken Hill community have been very clearly communicated to him, the Minister, our local Federal member and the senior representatives of Water NSW This is not the end. More has to be done and given the remarkable silence by some leaders in the community I can only assume these attacks are a distraction and should be treated as such. Lets get on with the job and ask all to show leadership and work together.
