Im sitting in my room shaking. The director of the Africa Conference on Land Grabs has just informed me that hes deploying me to go and make a presentation to the Pan African Parliament next week, and he might not accompany me as hes accompanying Dr Blessings Karumbidza to the South Afrikan parliament in Cape Town. I think I have a clear grasp of land grab politics and I know I can engage my peers about how land grabbing by foreign companies is contributing to the displacement of Afrikan people and the destruction of the biosphere. But I dont know if I can convince the parliament to put pressure on our nation states to enforce legislation that will limit the amount of large-scale land that we lease to transnational companies. I dont know if those Afrikan leaders are going to take seriously a 22 year old woman (and I say this with the knowledge of how patriarchal Afrikan society is) telling them to adopt the legislation that has been implemented by Argentina and Brazil with regards to limiting land grabs. May the spirits of Biko and Sobukwe guide me and give me strength to face this challenge. The gods know Im very very scared about this...
