Im sure Ive talked about the phrase God is on our side before, but I cant help but mention again how utterly and totally wrong that statement is. Lets look at the phrase carefully. We start with God. To be fair, Im only speaking from my own experience and about the God that I and many others who use this phrase profess to believe in. The one that is found in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Words that have been used to describe Him like awesome, mighty, everlasting, all-powerful and above-all are just a small part of the picture of who He is. If we believe that God is all of these things and a bag of chips, then it makes sense that He would be in charge of EVERYTHING. He is team captain. He is President. He is the General. He is the Emperor. No one is above Him. So why are we lowering him to team mate? Why do we impeach Him and make Him a cabinet member? Why do we court marshall Him and strip Him of His rank and depose Him as Emperor with the words, our side? Who is the our we are speaking of anyway? Is it America? Is it Christians? Is it white people? Who is it? Do you see how dangerous it is to say that He is on our side? It instantly pits humans against humans when in reality, the war is not against flesh and blood. God is sovereign over all and so not only is He the head coach, but He owns the team, the stadium, the land that its on, the country, the continent, the planet, the universe and beyond. It is not ours to give Him membership in. We are unworthy of Him. The fact that He loves us (and by us I mean every human being ever) is remarkable.
