Im sure most of you remember the San Gabriel Drive In near the corner of Valley Blvd and Del Mar Ave, In 1955 Edwards San Gabriel Drive-In opened. The architect of the 1100 car theater was J. Arthur Drielsma. The project included a 2,400 square foot building at the base of the screen tower, on the street side, which was designed as an office for the Edwards Theatre Circuit, and the companys headquarters re...mained there from 1955 until it was moved to Orange County in the 1970s. Though Edwards opened the theater in partnership with Pacific Drive-Ins, and for many years it appeared in the Pacific Drive-Ins listings in the Los Angeles Times, by the mid-1980s it was being listed in the Edwards Cinemas section, along with the Edwards Drive-In and the Azusa Drive-In.My brother Chuck Murphy and I worked at the San Gabriel Drive In in the late 1960s for a short time and my father Charlie, worked there from the late 60s thru the mid 1970s! Very cool place to work in the day! Got to see a lot of great movies! Sold out the place for movies like Planet of the Apes and Gone with the Wind! It was one of Mr Edwards first Drive Ins He actually had his office below the screen thru the mid 70s Great memories of that place!
