Im sure that this will get some mixed reviews but a friend of mine who used to live in SJ just returned for a visit after being gone for a year or two and was amazed and extremely disheartened w the amount of negative change SJ has gone through in regards to the belligerent backpacker party scene. This was my response to his comments... It changed quickly Kenny. It seemed like it was almost overnight. We got there in 08 and San Juan was just a quaint, dusty little surf/backpacker town. It stayed like that for the first few years and then out of nowhere a couple of the party hostels started doing well with their spring break party scene. With all of this damned social media, word spread like wild fire and before we knew it, I would here backpackers saying that they had heard of the party scene in San Juan while staying at hostels in Mexico, Guatemala, etc... It really sucks, I know Ive read here on FB a couple of the hostel owners defending themselves by saying how much money they raise which goes back into helping the local community in need. I guess there is validity to that but at what other costs? So now there are a few more school supplies but you cant safely walk down the street bc of all of the criminal element that has came to town to feed off of all of these partying backpackers. Doesnt seem like a fair trade off to me.
