Im surprised by the number of complaints I see from folks about their jobs. It seems many are confused about how the whole employment situation works. So Im going to break it down. Job: a trade, occupation or service that one provides in exchange for a paycheck. Still confused? You get hired to do a job. A job you applied for and accepted for a predetermined amount of pay. You do said job, you collect said paycheck. See how that exchange works? It is irrelevant whether or not you think the pay is adequate. You agreed to it at the acceptance phase of gaining said employment. Perhaps you can be disappointed in your own negotiation skills, but at no point are you entitled to anything extra or anything more than agreed upon paycheck for rendering services required for the exchange. You arent entitled to kudos, accolades, or pats on the back. Why do I see people complaining about customers? Lack of appreciation? And otherwise pouting because apparently, they arent getting Noddy Badges for DOING WHAT THEY ARE HIRED and PAID to do. Whats up with this I bust my butt for this company attitude and resulting expectation? Correction sweet cheeks. You bust your butt for a paycheck. Both obligations are then fulfilled. I see it from sales reps, nurses, teachers, retail employees, servers.... Everyone. Ok, correct me if Im wrong, but a good number of these positions required the decision be made to do them PLUS an additional 4+ years of post secondary education. It was a well thought out and executed CHOICE. You didnt accidentally become a teacher and Im very confident you didnt embark on that career path without knowledge of the earning potential. Great. You teach kids. Because that is what you wanted to do! Why now, is there an expectation that you are hard done by because daily praise and ego stroking is left unfulfilled? If you dont like your job, get out! Find another occupation. Being a server is hard work. I know. Ive done it. I received a paycheck for it. And while it may have been servers wages i.e. Peanuts, without exception, when you do a good job, as a whole, you are monetarily compensated for it. As long as you dont treat your tables like you are doing them a favor by waiting on them, you will reap the reward of being good at what you do. Of course, you will get stiffed on occasion. But if thats not the exception, or its the rule for you, find another occupation because you obviously suck at that one. Dont like retail during the holidays? No one is holding a gun to your head. Get out. Do something else. Im sure there are plenty of people who will take that job and do it well for nothing more than the paycheck. People like me out there who understand the whole concept of having a paying job. I get that work isnt fun everyday. I get that there is a difference in doing the bare minimum and going above and beyond. And I have enough experience in multiple areas that I KNOW when you go above and beyond, you WILL be rewarded with more than the current paycheck. Its called advancement. And Ive always advanced quickly in every position Ive had because I was raised to do more than was expected of me. And I would be rewarded with the pride of a job well done. I didnt expect raises or advancement, but I always got those too. Today people try to get away with the bare minimum and still demand recognition and higher pay. Wrong order folks. Thats doing it in the wrong order. I cannot stand the entitlement mentality that is prevalent these days. I have yet to encounter a single person that wasnt replaceable. So please, quit whining. Do your job. Collect your paycheck. And if thats not enough, leave and find something else. Or evaluate the job you are doing and I guarantee you will see why you are feeling inadequately rewarded. Be thankful. Be grateful. Lose the entitlement.
