Im tired of hearing about professional football players getting arrested. Heres the deal. We are part of the problem. We no longer seem to hold our athletes to standards expected from the general public and we continue to support the sport regardless of how many felonious acts are committed. Sure, we are momentarily appalled, but we continue to shell out big money for games, jerseys, and other paraphernalia as long as our team is a winner. Our idolization of the game and its players have contributed mightily to the sense of entitlement the players have. Cant hold a team responsible for an individuals actions? Thats bullsh**. These teams are very aware of what their players are doing. They have huge financial investments in their players; they know exactly what occurs in their lives. To think otherwise is complete naïveté. Goodell and the coaches knew exactly what went down in that elevator months before the general public did, just as they know what players have addiction issues, and which players have anger issues that make them walking time bombs. Perhaps we need to start hurting the BUSINESS of the NFL, as thus far, while we talk the talk, we are still watching games, buying products promoted during games, and rooting on our teams. Im just as guilty. Im a freakin woman and the thought of men beating their women sickens me. Yet I am still throwing on my favorite jersey and preparing to watch some games. Shouldnt I make a stance here and refuse to watch a league which seems to condone domestic violence via their refusal to take a no tolerance stance? Or perhaps no longer buy products promoted on the networks during game time? Yet the thought of no football on Sunday and Monday makes me cringe, and I like my beer with my pizza. However, I also realize it is people like me that allow the NFL to continue to thrive and not truly address the issue of players being arrested left and right for a variety of misconducts. It shames me because intellectually I understand as long as the NFL is booming financially, they will continue to band-aid these issues and wait until the public outcry blows over. Then it will be business as usual... A multi-billion dollar reflection of the mindset of society.....
