Im trying to resist the urge to feed the trolls after coming into the office and finding an anonymous snail-mail letter from an ignoramus who believes we have no journalistic integrity and have jumped the shark because we have hired a former executive director of the Brattleboro Chamber of Commerce. Not to be insulting, but do you have an understanding of ethics in journalism or how the lines are drawn between editorial and advertising? writes Disappointed, a former journalist with 30 years of experience who apparently selected his nom de plume from Dear Abby in 1977. I have nothing to hide and am dissatisfied with our papers journalistic performance only to the extent that we dont have enough money to do what we want — which is what the troll hopes for: a true alternative newspaper, willing to print the truth, invest in long-form journalism occasionally, poke its nose into dark corners, and stand its ground in the face of organized interests. With a strong executive director — one who has no say over what we publish and how we publish it — we now have an opportunity to build a newspaper that will serve our readers well and responsibly and will have no sacred cows. I dont know where Disappointed has been practicing journalism, but I sure hope the publication is served by something other than these blatant, sweeping, and out-and-out wrong generalizations. So, Disappointed: not to be insulting, but go f— yourself.
