Im very sad to hear the news that Mr Kevin McKellar, head teacher of my sons comprehensive Hendon School, has died. He was young and energetic, and turned the school round from a failing school to an outstanding school. When he started there, just before I decided to trust it for my sons, he was threatened with stabbing and had a breakdown. There used to be gang fights between this school and a rival school. Under Mr McKellars leadership, students could aim for As and A stars and get into the top universities (as my son did). He was a passionate and inspirational speaker, always going around the school to motivate staff and pupils. He was also full of love for them and I remember him saying he personally visited a 6th former who had worked to hard and was having a breakdown to get them back to school and on to university. It just shows that it can be done and we should trust and support our local schools and help them improve. The teenagers change when we believe in them and treat them with the love Mr McKellar gave. It took its toll. I wont speculate on how he died as his family have asked us to remember how he lived. We will certainly never forget him.
