Im working on a short article called… Ferguson to Freedom: The Possibilities of a Black Future Wanted to share a brief segment of it. We must come to understand that antiblack violence -- the quotidian micro-aggressions, the gratuitous, dramatized violence against black people, are not the result of a sordid collection of individual acts by bad actors: racist cops, white vigilantes, bigoted colleagues and acquaintances, profiling store clerks, typical stereotyping pedestrians, etc. Indeed they are completely systemic and unremarkable, and therefore absolutely normative to the construction and functioning of American society. No intellectually honest examination of American social, legal, religious, and economic history can render it as anything other than a genealogy of organized violence against African descended peoples. And were we to make a genuine attempt at bringing about true racial justice in America it would require a movement set on the radical changing -- and in some cases, complete abolition -- of many of the nations most celebrated institutions as they presently exist. But America doesnt yet have an appetite for that. In heightened moments like this it can entertain only mere conversations on race, and little else.
