Imagery is a vital part of poetry, which is captured by a poem from our student, Abby Lybrook, that we’d like to share: this is the brooklyn bridge 6 train next stop is bleecker st. theres a man, nervous, holding a newspaper with the headline BLOODY RAID he nods in approval of what that omnipresent voice has to say i listen in on ancient germanic conversations that teach me only a little but more than i get from the advertisement up above about practical philosophies less than i get from squirrel courage teachers rainbow pigeons soul beating heart drumming in Washington Square i am at peace with my brothers have not spoken to most of them in 10,000 yrs but they mingle here among the raging heart of my city body panicked and laughing in joy not afraid to bring their children not afraid to bring their lifes work in the forms of stacks of handwritten pages that reach 7 ft. high sound waves, beards that drag in the dust business suits, gardens in their bicycle baskets because theres no room for them in their nonexistent homes i heard from an immigrant brother you become a bum in New York and i heard from the children on the friends seminary playground that torture is a moral issue i heard from everywhere that the revolution is being televised because revolution is a syndicated cycle the evolution will not be because for one, evolution is controversial and for two, slow, steady productive change is too boring for prime time too boring for soap opera so whats the point of peaceful growth and loving all your brothers if its not BLOODY RAID and coup détat in bold letters and soothing subway announcements, why bother why hold the paper and panic why ride the brooklyn bridge 6 train to bleecker st.
