Imhotep of Ancient Egypt was called the real Father of Medicine. He lived about 2300 B.C. Greece and Rome got their knowledge of medicine from him. In Rome statues depict him as a black man, which he was. He was one of only a few commoners ever to be accorded divine status after death. A surviving papyrus was discovered that contained anatomical observations, ailments and cures The papyrus was written about 1700 B.C. and is on display at the Brooklyn Childrens Museum. There are 48 cases written on the papyrus. He extracted many of his medicines from plants. The saying Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow we may die has been traced to him.
