Immanuel Retreat Center presents... Movie Night: Brother Sun, Sister Moon Saturday, November 16th at 7:30 pm Immanuel Retreat Center invites the public to a Movie Night at 7:30 pm on Saturday, November 16 at 7:30 pm. The 1972 Franco Zeffirelli film Brother Sun, Sister Moon stars Graham Faulkner, Judi Bowker and Alec Guinness. It is a dramatization of events in the life of St. Francis of Assisi from before his conversion experience through his audience with the pope, including his friendship with St. Clare. Movie Night is by donation and is a fundraiser for Immanuel Retreat Center. Christianity Today comments: Director Franco Zeffirelli is often accused of sentimentality, and this film and its flower power sensibility plays right into that expectation. St. Francis of Assisi is presented as the original hippie, complete with trippy folk songs and a love will conquer all pseudo-philosophy that gets little cred in our more savvy and cynical day. Its too bad Brother Sun, Sister Moon has that reputation, because theres much more to the film than that. If were embarrassed by the movies simplistic rejection of war and materialism, how much more uncomfortable we would be with St. Francis himself? As easy (and tempting) as it may be to discount Donovans get high on God lyrics, its much harder (but just as tempting) to try to dodge the words of Jesus that Francis constantly quotes: You cannot serve both God and money! Join us for Movie Night on Saturday, November 16. This event is a public portion of the retreat, A Spiritual Journey with St. Francis happening November 15-17. Entrance is by donation and doors open at 7 pm for the 7:30 opening credits of the film Brother Sun, Sister Moon in the Chapel of Immanuel Episcopal Church, the Stone Church in Bellows Falls.
