Immediate Action Needed!! Stop the US Federal Government From Undermining State Shark Fin Bans!! Tell NOAA that we do not approve of the proposed rule on the Shark Conservation Act. The National Marine Fisheries Service recently issued a proposed rule on the Shark Conservation Act of 2010, which has the potential to overturn, or ‘preempt’, all existing state laws that prohibit the possession, sale, and distribution of shark fins. The 10 state and territory laws (Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, Delaware, Maryland, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa), which are stricter than federal laws, are extremely important conservation measures that need to be kept in tact- they work with the SCA to help deter shark finning by reducing the market for shark fins- if possession is illegal in more ports, there will be less shark fin trading within the US.
