Immediate response is required was the command given by the Guernsey County Sheriff Department’s Dispatcher at 2:50 a.m. when Pleasant City, Byesville and Senecaville’s Fire Departments were toned for response to a fully engulfed truck maintenance facility in Buffalo Ohio early Sunday morning. That is exactly what was provided as Senecaville’s equipment and volunteers rolled into the area to attack the fire that was shooting almost 50 feet into the air in very close proximity to kerosene, diesel and gas pumps and tanks at the Duke and Duchess Gas Station in Buffalo on State Route 313 just off exit 37 of I-77. Senecaville Fire Chief Jeff Guiler was the incident commander as theirs was the first response on scene. He immediately directed firemen to fight the raging blaze in several key locations in an attempt to preclude a potentially catastrophic mishap to occur if the fire spread to the fuel tanks and pumps less than 25 feet from the tremendous flames. A portatank was set up to feed the pumpers allowing them to provide continuous attack without leaving to refill the tankers. As fire fighters responded from Lore City, Byesville, Old Washington, Cumberland, Liberty and Belle Valley they quickly gained the upper hand against what appeared insurmountable odds because the entire large facility was in total distress. Coordinated mutual aid by all departments was finely orchestrated as was the demand at hand and the fire was contained to only the vehicle maintenance facility and the firemen won over the fire thus circumventing an extremely volatile disaster throughout the neighborhood. In addition to the response by the various fire departments the Guernsey County Sheriff’s Department responded with their deputies to cordon off the area from inquisitive passersby. The pictures themselves depict the courage and drive the responding firefighters displayed while operating with the utmost safety considerations yet still maintaining themselves in precarious hazardous locations to expediently suppress this hazardous situation. An estimated 30 firefighters from the area responded and there were no personal injuries as a result of their actions.
