Immediately after Sandy Hook, our community was in a state of being rarely experienced in modern society. For a few days, everyone one encountered, was kind, willing to help in any way possible, and willing to do just about anything to help one another. Everyone was given the benefit of the doubt. Everyone practiced their version of “do unto others” with no judgment or limit on what that meant. Empathy, not sympathy ruled the day. Despite our hearts being ripped out, in a sense, Newtown was perhaps one of the most pleasant places to live on earth. I consider it a gift to have witnessed for a short time, what humanity can and should be all of the time. On that note, one of the organizations I have been helping with is called the Newtown Foundation. It is mostly the youth of our community who witnessed the very same outpouring of peace and love, and have committed themselves to peacefully healing and supporting a variety of programs in the hope that the triggers that lead to senseless violence will have fewer places to foment. A team of our volunteers decided to do what is called a “tough mudder” to both have a little fun and to symbolically show the determination we have to do what we can to save lives. It’s 12 miles with 20 obstacles including electrocution, knee deep mud, and ice plunges. Please take a moment today to give what you can at newtownaction.org/product/newtown-mudders-fundraiser/
