Impact of 1000-hour KA bandh Correspondent/Staff Reporter DIPHU/DIMAPUR, OCT 27:Published on 28 Oct. 2014 1:04 AM IST Print Text Size Joint Action Committee for Autonomous State (JACAS) 1,000 hour Karbi Anglong bandh began Monday morning, affecting normal life and vehicular movement on highways passing through the district. Karbi Anglong district Superintendent of Police Ugdhajyoti Dev Mahanta said no untoward incident has been reported so far. All educational institutes and financial establishments remained closed, while negligible attendance has been recorded in government offices across the district, he added. Mahanta said vehicles remained off the two National Highways passing through the district although there was no blockade reported in any part of Karbi Anglong. JACAS has called the bandh from 5 a.m. October 27 till 9 p.m. December 7 in protest against the delay in announcing the dates for next round of talks since the last one held on November 6, 2013 for creation of a separate autonomous state within Assam under Article 244 A of the Constitution. The impact of the bandh had its effect in Nagaland and Manipur with vehicular traffic disrupted during the day along National Highway (NH) 39 which connects both Assam’s Golaghat and Nagaon districts with the two states. Vehicles plying along NH-39 had to be given security escort along the 32 kilometres stretch in eastern Karbi Anglong. The bandh also affected all three sub-divisions of Karbi Anglong district. In Hamren subdivision, vehicles were off the road; government offices; educational institutions; banks and other establishments remained closed. Bokajan subdivision in eastern part of the district also felt the impact of the bandh. However, compared with other sub-divisions, normal production of cement was reported from Cement Corporation of India unit located in Bokajan town. In Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council area, almost all establishments remained closed. In Diphu, except for the Deputy Commissioner’s office, every government and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council establishments remained closed. Trains between Lumding and Dibrugarh section was plying as per schedule. There was no report of any untoward incidents till the filing of this report. Imphal Correspondent Adds: The 1,000-hour Karbi Anglong bandh in Assam had triggered panic in Manipur as almost all petrol pumps in Imphal closed down after brief opening Monday morning. People were seen standing in beeline queues at two or three petrol pumps. A source informed that the petrol pumps closed down taking advantage of non-arrival of oil tankers from Assam. State Govt., CNCC appeal public not to panic DIMAPUR, OCT 27 (NPN): Department of Food and Civil Supplies and the Kohima administration have appealed the people not to panic, informing that the state has sufficient stock of both petrol/diesel products and essential commodities. In a press release, additional secretary, department of food and civil supplies H. Lungalang said these products were transported by train and there was no scope of any adverse effect due to the 1000-hour proposed bandh. The additional secretary has appealed the people not to be misled by false rumours of scarcity and avoid unnecessary panic buying. State has sufficient stock of fuel, essential commodities - Deptt of F&CS - DC Kohima: Deputy Commissioner (DC), Kohima W. Honje Konyak has also appealed to the public not to panic over the reported shortage of petrol/diesel and other essential commodities in the state capital. He informed that there was “absolutely no possibility of shortage of fuel and essential commodities.” The DC stated that adequate security arrangements have been made by Assam Police for regulating normal traffic in the bandh affected areas. Staff Reporter Adds: Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce (CNCC) has appealed to the people not to panic over buying fuel and essential commodities following the 1000 hour Karbi Anglong district bandh from Monday. The bandh has been called by the joint action committee for autonomous state (JACAS) demanding for creation of an autonomous state. Speaking to media persons at his residence, CNCC president Hokivi Chishi said that the government has enough stock of essential commodities that would last for at least three weeks as assured by DC and SP of Dimapur. In case of petroleum products, Hokivi said that there was no need to panic as there was a depot in Dimapur. He said supply of essential commodities would not be affected as DC and SP of Karbi Anglong had also assured to provide escort to vehicle ferrying goods. CNCC president also cautioned business community not to take advantage of the bandh and said that appropriate action would be taken against hoarders and those responsible for price hike. When contacted SP Dimapur, V.Z. Angami told Nagaland Post that escort would be provided to transporters and travellers from Khatkati till Garampani both to and fro, four times a day. “Vehicles are plying and that there was no need to panic”, he added. Escort would be provided from 8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., he said. Angami said that his Karbi Anglong counterpart M.J. Mahanta had also assured additional company of security forces and their deployment in providing escort and security services. Mahanta assured that all essential commodities should reach Dimapur without much problem, Angami said. “We have enough fuel, and I have learnt from DCCI that there is enough stock of essential commodities”, he added.
