Important Arrival Information for New and Returning International - TopicsExpress

Important Arrival Information for New and Returning International Students! The United States Department of Homeland Security has implemented temporary procedures to verify your status in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). If you have an I-20 or DS-2019 when you arrive in the United States and show your immigration documents to the immigration officials, you will be sent to a secondary inspection. This deferral to secondary inspection will be the normal procedure until the new system is in place to verify your SEVIS status. The secondary inspection does not necessarily indicate that anything is wrong with your documents. This secondary inspection is required because currently only the immigration officials in secondary inspection can confirm in SEVIS that your SEVIS record is active. Expect delays. The secondary inspection will take additional time so do not expect to make plane connections. Be sure that you allow extra time between the time you are scheduled to arrive at the U.S. airport and the time your connecting flight is scheduled to depart. Expect long lines at Immigration. Currently, it is estimated that it takes between 1 – 3 hours to get through Immigration. New I-94 Procedures: Some good news. You will no longer be required to complete an I-94 form (the white or green card that you filled out on the airplane or at the Port of Entry). Information about the new procedure can be found at: cbp.gov/xp/cgov/newsroom/news_releases/national/04262013_4.xml After arrival in the United States you can print your I-94 information from the CBP website at: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html If you have any questions, please contact the International Student and Scholar Office (ISSO) at [email protected] or at (402) 472-0324.
