Important Dates of the Titanic Mid-1907: J. Bruce Ismay (White Star Line’s chairman) and J.P. Morgan (American financer who controlled the International Mercantile Marine Co. –IMM-) discussed the possibility of creating three ships that would compete against Cunard’s Lusitania and Mauretania (the fastest ships at that time) and the German lines Hamburg America and Norddeutscher Lloyd. Ismay preferred to compete in size rather than in speed. July 29, 1908: Belfast shipbuilder Harland and Wolff presented drawings of the ships to Ismay and other White Star Line executives. Ismay signed three letters of agreement and authorized the construction two days later. The construction of the ships Olympic and Titanic began and were built virtually in parallel. March 31, 1909: Titanic’s hull was laid. The ships took 26 months to build. May 31, 1911: Titanic was launched to the sea and towed so that during the next year the engines, funnels and superstructure were installed and the interior was fitted out. September 20, 1911: temporary pause in Titanic’s construction in order to repair Olympic’s collision with the Hawke. April 2, 1912: two days after it was finished, Titanic had her sea trials. At 7:00 p.m. she received an “Agreement and Account of Voyages and Crew” valid for twelve months, in other words the ship was seaworthy. At 8:00 p.m. she left Belfast to head to Southampton. April 4, 1912: arrival in Southampton at midnight. April 10, 1912: Titanic’s maiden voyage begins. April 11, 1912: Titanic arrived at Cook Harbour, south coast of Ireland. It was here where seven passengers left the ship and the last photograph of the ship was taken. April 14, 1912: Titanic strikes an iceberg. April 15, 1912: at 2:20 a.m. the ship sinks. September 1, 1985 the wreck of the Titanic was found. January 2015: readers of The Fly of the Wall will see photographs of the Titanic as it was in 1912 and in 2001. :D Check the pictures for a visual storyline, ~Alexandria
