Garfield dies of wounds suffered in a July 2 shooting. 1946 – The Council of Europe is founded following a speech by Winston Churchill at the University of Zurich. 1950– U. N. Assembly rejects Indian-Soviet proposal to admit Communist China in New York. 1952 – The United States bars Charlie Chaplin from re-entering the country after a trip to England. 1955 – President Juan Peron of Argentina was ousted after a revolt by the military. 1957 – The United States conducted its first underground nuclear test, in the Nevada desert. 1960 – Sindhu River water-sharing settement was signed between India and Pakistan. 1965 – Government extends ultimatum to India to dismantle forts within four days in China. 1990 – Planning Commission announces 8th Five-Year Plan proposals with a total outlay of Rs. 610,000 crore. 1995 – PM leaves for a 5-day visit to the two Central Asian republics of Turkmenistan and Kyrghistan. 1996 – India Development Forum pledges $7b. to India. 2004 – Hu Jintao became the undisputed leader of China with the departure of former President Jiang Zemin from his top military post.
