Important concept to remember: You CAN obey God without truly submitting to Him- but you cannot submit to God without obeying Him. Example: Jonah obeyed God, but he did not do it with a submissive heart. He went to to the Assyrian capitol and proclaimed the message that God gave him, but he did so with a resentful heart. Because of this-- he missed the joy that he should have experienced when he realized that God was showing His grace to a people who REALLY did not deserve it. The Angels in Heaven were rejoicing over the multitude of sinners that repented, but Jonah was whining about how his will wasnt being done. Obedient, but not submissive. When we obey God because He brings circumstances into our lives that push and compel us to obedience, like Jonah, we will often miss out on the joy of watching Gods perfect will be done because we are wallowing in our own wrong attitudes.
