Important news!!!! Please read. We have received information that the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has received an application for a permit to establish a Confined Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) in Steuben County. This operation would construct two barns to house a total of 4800 pigs to maturity of 200-250 pounds. This would take several months. The CAFO would be located at the intersection of 200N and 600W, or approximately 2-3 miles south of Lake Gage-Lime Lake. The application states that the manure produced would be spread on local ground where this applicant farms. We’ve heard rumblings that some of this land is very close to Crooked Lake’s 2nd and 3rd basin. Should this application be approved, some potential problems might be: Ground water contamination Diminished property values Health issues from airborne contaminants Stench and fly infestation Barbara Sha Cox, a very pro-active voice in the fight against CAFO’s in the state of Indiana, has volunteered to come and speak in this regard on Saturday, June 15th @ 2:00pm at the Lake Gage Marina Barn. If you have questions or are concerned about potential problems that may be created by this operation, please plan to attend the meeting. We only have approximately 30 days from the date the application was submitted (5/28/13) to voice our concerns. Unfortunately, we are unable to do anything about this on our own as we do not have any other information to help provide clarification or better understanding at this point. Your attendance and participation (as well as ours) will help guide the decisions on how we, as a lake community, proceed with this issue. We look forward to seeing you this Saturday (6/15) at 2pm at the Lake Gage Marina Barn. Trish and Sara
