In 1838 Valentine Winters and several others incorporated the Third Street Bridge Company. Completed in 1839 by Peter Stoneberger, the covered bridge charged a fee to everyone who used it. When the bridge was taken down in 1904 it was said that the structure was as solid as when placed across the river sixty-five years earlier. The Third Street concrete bridge pictured here was completed in 1905.
