In 1839, the city of Chattanooga was incorporated. The city began to grow but in 1850 became a boom town with the arrival of the railroad. This year, 2014, Chattanooga is 175 years old. I found two sites celebrating that achievement... If you are from here or live here now, you may want to take a look back to see just how far we have come........ cha175.org or deepzoomchattanooga B&W Image source: Chattanooga Public Library Pic 1 - From the James building looking South on Broad St. The year is about 1910; the rail yard is that of the Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis Railway Pic 2. - Ariel photo around 1950s taken from about Main St. looking North toward the Tennessee River. The NC&St.L Union Station is visible on the left and the Southern Railway freight station in the lower right. Pic. 3 - It is 1907 and the street cars are running down Market St. like airplanes landing at Atlanta in 2014! Look closely and you will see several headed south. The location is 8th & Market. Pic. 4 - In 1912 you would find the railroad freight station of the Queen & Crescent route (CNO&TP) on 12th St. behind the Southern Railway office building. Today, it is the home of the Urban Stack restaurant. Pic. 5 - In 2014, The railroad is still very much a part of Chattanooga as SR 4501 and SR 630 cross Chickamauga Creek on the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museums tracks headed West toward Missionary Ridge tunnel.
