In 1897, a newspaper in Britain asked a number of well-known religious leaders to contribute a Christmas message to its readers. The Rev. John Watson, writing under the pseudonym Ian Maclaren, offered this short sermon: “Be pitiful, for every man is fighting a hard battle.” On this Christmas morning, we reflect with wonder on our God who sent His son to earth to reconcile our broken relationship with Him by conquering sin, allowing us to fulfill this call to empathy, patience, and loving-kindness towards our fellow man. And the Angel said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. (Luke 2:10-11) Merry Christmas!
