In 1925 W.E.B. DuBois and Regina Anderson co-founded the Krigwa Players for the sole purpose of advancing Black playwrights and pracititioners.DuBois wanted to create a theater that followed his belief of for us,by us,about uswhich meant he wanted a troupe of Black actors, performing pieces or shows written by Black playwrights.Krigwa was immediately affiliated with the NAACP because of their importance on political theater. It was a way to communicate to the community new ideas and new messages. In the 1930s the groups impact was felt throughout the Black community in Harlem and Baltimore, where they had built an extension group. In 1926 the Krigwa Players Little Negro Theatre found a home at the public library on 135th str.with Du Bois as chairman.Besides giving opportunities to Black actors,Krigwa held competitions with prizes for Black dramatists...and now From the Grave...To the Stage....BLACKSPEARthe offspring of GREATNESS!!!
