In 1943, at the age of only 21, Giuliana Cavaglieri Tesoro (1921–2002) received her Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, completing Yale Universitys graduate program in record time. It was the beginning of a brilliant career in the field with more than 125 U.S. patents. Decisive was in particular her contribution to the textile industry with the invention of the flame-retardant fiber. Giuliana Cavaglieri was born in Venice, Italy. In 1938, she was denied access to Italys university system due to the promulgation of the Fascist Racial Laws. She moved to Switzerland first and then in 1939 to the United States. After her graduation at Yale, she worked as a researcher in some of the most important American Chemical Companies and as a Visiting Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, one of the first Italian scientists to reach such prestigious positions.
