In 1945, Abraham Brenner was serving overseas in Hanover, in newly-liberated Germany. He sent this poignant account of Yom Kippur services with Jewish survivors in the Bergen-Belsen Displaced Persons Camp to his friend Bill Berger, editor of the Y Beacon newspaper in Montreal. More than 50 years later, the editor’s brother David Berger brought the original document to the MHMC with a request to find Mr. Brenner or his descendants. The staff of the Centre spent over four years searching for Mr. Brenner, contacting Veterans Affairs Canada and Jewish war veterans groups, and publishing the account in various newspapers. In 2003, Mr. Brenner’s son Rudy came forward, donating the letter and other documents belonging to his late father. Prior to reading about the letter in the Montreal Gazette, he had no idea that the document existed. You can find more about the original letter on our online catalogue, part of the Canadian Jewish Heritage Network: cjhn.ca/en/permalink/cjhn75321
