In 1953, the Erie Railroad completed construction of the Hornell - TopicsExpress

In 1953, the Erie Railroad completed construction of the Hornell yards. The yards began at ZY Tower and continued one mile north. The facility was sixteen tracks wide and featured the Ice House. In addition, the Bunk House provided sleeping quarters for train crewmen. My dad worked 42 years for the Erie. Most of the time he was a car inspector in the yards. No doubt many of you had family or friends who worked there. Several years ago, I went to this site to photograph the ZY Tower. It was gone along with everything else except one set of tracks. The Erie played a huge role in the history of Hornell. Fortunately, the museum at the depot showcases this history. Gone are the trains but the memories remain.
