In 1963, in the build up to 1964 general election, Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintolas faction of Action Group formed alliance with Sir Ahmadu Bellos Northern Peoples Congress. That marriage gave birth to New Nigerian Alliance. During NNA campaign in Jos in 1964, Akintola and Ahmadu Bello boasted that...this partys wind will sweep the entire nation bare, and there is nothing the womens opposition party (UPGA) can do about it. Quite true to their boasts, that election swept the wild wild west and the Tiv province really bare. The west became a theatre of war, Tiv land became restive, the country was ungovernable, the Army struck, lives were lost and the nation gridlocked. Alhaji Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari have formed yet another alliance, a semblance of NNA. They are making inflaming statements, similar to the one of 1964, and the people are watching. Shall we not learn from our past?
