In 1965, Civil Rights Advocates for Racial Equality turned the small rural town of Selma Alabama into Ground Zero in the confrontation over the generations long injustice of systematic restrictions on Voting Rights for African Americans. They put it all on the line for the cause of right, to their very own lives. One could have asked, Its just voting. Is this all worth it, considering the surge in violence and drama it is causing? Well, 50 years later, we can now look back and with reverence answer that question quite soundly. 50 years later, again we have the opportunity to have another important confrontation over a civil right, the rights of civil marriage the generations of tomorrow will thank us for. The right to choose who you will intimately share your life with and all the legal protections and validations it affords, is just as important in the truth of being an American as having the right to have a say in who will represent your best interests in the halls of government. Though we hope not to be called upon to sacrifice as deeply as they did, we must also stand ready to put it all on the line for the cause of justice. The two causes are starkly parallel; the right of self-determination.
