In 1972, I was a relatively wild, bookish, thin, bushy-head, 22-year-old, who had been kicked out of mortician school in Nashville, when President Nixon tested his COINTELPRO tactics and arrested a group that would later be called The Wilmington Ten. Two years earlier, in 1970, another sad event made me realize that the 1970s was going to be no joke. The Jackson State Massacre at first looked like the MLK Riots of 1968. Until COIINTELPRO kicked in. In 1971, H. Rap Brown got busted in NYC for sticking up a bar. Those were all serious signs that the 1970s was the lowest point of the black consciousness movement. Marvin Gayes 1971 hit song said it best: Whats Going On? You dig?
