In 1976, I was 17 years old and a Junior in High School. I was driving a 75 Blue Chevy Camaro. For weeks I had been asking this beautiful girl and fellow artist on dates....and for weeks she would smile and kindly say no ... all the while breaking my poor lonely heart. I called her B. I sat by her in art class, we spoke sometimes, and she was always nice to me. Just about the time I was losing hope, our Art Teacher had scheduled a dozen of us art students on a Saturday to a class art competition against other schools at the Las Vegas Convention Center. B and I were selected to the group. We all were featuring our different styles and techniques and we were there all day and into the early evening. I got to work next to B most of the day but at the end of a long but very fun day, I just happened to be at the right place at the right time. There was a bank of Pay Phones next to the restrooms. As I walked out, I saw B and heard her calling for a ride home but no one was available. The Damsel in distress, I thought to myself and a chance to be a hero! I offered her a ride home. Oh my goodness, she was so leery but she accepted. In my softest Stevie voice, I asked her if she would like a bite to eat on the way home. It took her a minute to decide but she smiled and said yes. I took her to the Vineyard at the Boulevard Mall. I had a friend who worked there and we got served wine with our Italian dinner...then more wine ... then more wine. We left the restaurant quite happy and drove to the desert towards the lake. We found the perfect spot to park with a great view of the Vegas lights. We talked and we laughed. We counted shooting stars. She told me her life story and I told her mine. I showed her how to smoke a cigarette and she got a little sick for a minute. Just about the time we could see first light on the eastern horizon, she asked me to turn the radio on and take her home. Maybe, Im Amazed was the very first song that played and the first time I had heard it. She said, I love this song!. At the front of her home, she kissed me goodnight and ran to her door. The following Monday at school, she smiled and thanked me and told me she got in so much trouble by her parents. Nothing ever became of our wonderful night except a beautiful memory of a beautiful girl, a beautiful kiss, and this beautiful song! Enjoy! youtu.be/x_FiIilTwIA
