In 1981 I went to a UofH basket ball game. They had a great team. Pat Bellamy loved the Coogs. I liked the Razorbacks. They both had great teams, ranked high. They were the dominate teams back then. Guy Lewis vs Eddie Sutton. A classic match up. We decided to go to the game, Pat got us student tickets. It was at the very beginnings of what would become a legendary team. We saw a hand made sign by a couple of students, just paper and marker. It said Phi Slama Jama. Later that season the paper picked up on it. The Coogs jumped out to a big led and Arkansas was never really in the game. In the second half Guy inserts a Freshman that nobody could pronounce his name. It was obvious that he could not understand English. He stood in the middle of the key and jumped straight up swatting every thing back. About half the shots were counted as goal tending but it became hilarious to watch. Players and the referees tried to tell him things, he just smiled and kept jumping and blocking everything. UofH won big that day, and as we were leaving the PA announcer said. Hakeem Olajawon has set a new SW conf. record with 19 blocked shots. Later that year Phi Slama Jama became a big deal. And Hakeem went on to have many more favorable days on the hardwood in Houston.
