In 1982 the National Parks & Wildlife Service translocated native Red deer from Killarney National Park in Kerry to Connemara National Park in Co Galway. While the first attempt failed, after much discussion a second attempt was made to populate the Connemara mountains with native Red deer. While there were lots of ups and downs, in the end they succeeded. The first photograph is of a Connemara Red stag, big bodies but poor antlers. In time the antlers in the district would improve but not as a result of better mineral provisions but as a result of other deer introduction, non- native. The second photograph is a non native Red stag introduced from a farm in Wicklow, these stags were introduced in 1995 with English bloodline from Warnham Park.
