In 1992 I began to fall in love with Brasil. I visited for the first time in June of 1993. I traveled around Brasil to meet people and learn about the country. The money in 1994 was R$0,95 to $1,00 this happened because was the beginning real plan, the real plan started in 1994 and the president was Itamar Franco and Fernando Henrique Cardoso was de economy minister, before this he elected to Presidente of Brasil and start the program could name Neo-liberalism where the influence was USA, put everything for sell, the state companies, the Usiminas was the first company to be sold, and it was because it had a stable financial life with profits at the end of the year. Never in the history had Brasil done investigations about corruption happen. It was President Lula that allowed the Police Federal to have the liberty to investigate corruption. During Fernando Henrique Cardoso administration this is not possible, because the federal police are integrated into the Ministry of Justice and therefore when the investigations would come to politicians or rich people, the investigations were stopped. As a citizen of the USA it was great because I could do more for less. The unemployed were at 40 million people. The US corporations controlled 45% of the wealth of Brasil. The state of Minas Gerais as well as others was not sending money to Brasilia. The highways were not being repaired and in general the country was not governable. But this was great for business from other countries. To see this country with so many beautiful people that are so creative and hard working be screwed by corporate was very sad to me. For you need to know it was impacting my new family in very many ways. The change of the money takes savings from hard working people and began destroying the basic fibrous of the nation. Leaving millions of people poorer then even. But if you were connected to FCH the government would give money to rich people to get over these times. Money to build businesses that were that was not helping the country. I was in Rio the day Lula was installed as the new president. I could not believe that how the country began to change for the better. As I walked on the beach in Rio, workers cleaning up from the party on New Year’s Eve, smiled and speak to me, saying Hello. The days before that they do not smile and would not speak or ever look at me. The spirit of the nation changed for the better in my opinion. The first thing the new president did was to cancel a order for F-15 jet planes from the USA moving the money for that to a fund to feed the hungry. I have watched Brasil to become energy independent, stable money exchange. Highway being repaired and/or built. The country is now governable with 35 million jobs being created over the late 12 years. The debt to the World Bank completely paid off and the creation of BRICS to help other countries. The 12 years under Lula and Dilma I have seen this great country group into a great world leader. The UN has seen Brasil lead the fight for the LGBT communities’ rights around the world, to be the first country to tell the world that we are sorry for slavery. (Unlike the USA that will not deal with the issue.) To show the world that we are a great nation and a great host for world events. The price of oil today is not helping Brasil or any other oil producers. But we are still in better shape than when I first came to Brasil. Dilma is not a bad president and the nation is not going hell. So I say that it takes time to make real change and 12 years is very short in the big picture. To have a native that takes care of the neediest is a great nation, for those rich people do/will/always take care of them. And for those that are too young to remember the “…good old days of military rule and caudate with prison for the ones that spoke up for freedom…” I tell you that you must study the history first and then look at the big picture. For the most corrupt government in Brasil was not the last 12 years, but the thirty years before today government. Believe me you shall not find a more justice and reasoned government for the people than this one today. But it takes our efforts to make sure that change continues because justice, freedom and peace will disappear when we say “…let them take care for us I am too busy now.” It is then the greedy hands of corporations shall do as they have in the U.S.A. and rent or buy the government for themselves give us the big finger. The rich will pay some to tell us that it is the fault of the workers that wants everything from the government. Do not be used by the greedy of the capitalist, work to make this country (Brasil) greater for its people not just its rich. For the rich will always take care of the rich. And remember “…an injury to one of us in an injury to all of us”. The future is in our hands today don’t allow it to be taken away again like in 1964. For it was at the hands of the Rockefellers, that lead Brasil into the darkness of a truly ‘Capitalist Country’. And it was in the hands of workers and students that took over twenty years to bring freedom back to Brasil. Understand who our friends are and who the real enemy of freedom is. I end this by saying to you that Brasil is and with your help shall continue to be the future of the world. For I love my new country and the people of Brasil. Remember Pope Francis has said “…man is not in charge toady. Money is in charge today. Money is ruling…” Please join me in the struggle for the future.
