In 2007, I was expecting my daughter and working at Tigo at the same time. It wasnt anything new because before me, there have been millions of women who have worked tirelessly while pregnant. Now, the catch in my experience though, was that I had to go through the trying moments of pregnancy right in front of the camera. The good times were celebrated. The very bad times were ridiculed. As for the weight gain, lets not even start. On one very interesting and unforgettable occasion however, we were holding a press conference at the Golden Tulip. Unfortunately for this heavily pregnant woman, the stage was a few inches too high. When it was my turn to speak, I waddled over, placed my Palm on my knee for support and pushed myself up! The chuckles in the room began from the back.. Nooooooooo I wasnt offended at all!! As a matter of fact, I thought it was humorous and chuckled along! After the speeches and the launch, I was quickly summoned by some pressmen and women for questions. Now there were about 3 of them pointing their recorders to me recording my comments. A few inches away there were two gentlemen rolling up their camera cables and one said (amidst even more chuckles). As for women God did not bless them well craaaaaa. You and a man do something in the darkness and it will show on only you!. The other burst out laughing and responded ah but as for these women they will go and marry and fall pregnant and their whole career will be over. Too useless. I wont lie it hurt a little. That two middle aged men....most probably husbands and fathers would think so negatively of motherhood. In any case, I brushed it off. And as a matter of fact, it empowered me more than they probably even realized. Now fast forward to two days ago. I visited with a friend who works where these gentleman came from.. after our meeting, we stood by my car for a few minutes finishing up our conversation when, my eyes caught a glimpse of that very pressman who called me useless.!!!! Walking ever so confidently towards me he said Ei Madam Anita I have been following you ohh. You have done very well. I didnt know women could be so strong. The way you have gone to born and now youve come back to tv. Woowww!! How did you do it . I paused for a split second. Making sure I would make a point without necessarily insulting him. But I couldnt help it. The words squeezed themselves out of my lips you see its men like you I feel sorry for. Because you obviously werent close to your mother. Because the way I see it, if you were, you would appreciate women like me better. Didnt your mother go through same? Did she become useless? He was confused!! If my words could cut, it would have sliced his shirt open like a Sumarai sword!!! Poor guy. Im not sure he quite understood where the words were coming from!!! My friend looked at me...she was also very confused. When he had walked off, I turned to her and recounted my experience. Together we began to crumple into spasms of mirth!!!! Wow! That felt so good!!! So today, when Im asked why I started a business and called it Brand Woman Africa, I tell these kinds of stories. And they are all based on my personal experiences. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly!!!!!! Therell be more on my blog launching 6/10/2014. Www.anitaerskinespeaks. Have a very blessed day!!
