In 2009, Irish illustrator and cartoonist Tomm Moore created the great animated film, The Secret of the Kells which told a fantasy-rich story of a boy living in a monastery who helps create The Book of the Kells, an illustrated or illuminated manuscript of the four gospels of The New Testament. The movie featured a brilliant visual theme inspired by the original illustrations of the middle ages. His new film, The Song of the Sea looks to be just as beautiful and even stars, once more, the voice talents of one of Irelands best, Brendan Gleeson (28 Days Later, Braveheart, In Bruges). This time, the story revolves around the Irish and Scottish legend / folklore of the selkies; creatures that take the form of seals in the sea and become human on land. One of my favorite selkie stories is The Secret of Roan Inish (The Secret of Ron Mor Skerry), this looks to be just as good. The visual style again maintains the theme of the source stories. Already released in Ireland, a US release is scheduled for December 19.
