In 2010 T&T was the #19 exporter of shark fin to the worlds largest shark fin market, Hong Kong with 103104kg . By 2011 T&T had risen to the #6 spot, exporting 332396 kg of shark fin to Hong Kong (Census and Statistics Department of Hong Kong via Pew Environment). What happened? Why did the figure more than triple. At the same time a major tuna processor from the US closed its processing plant in Sea Lots, Trinidad, citing supply problems i.e. the tuna is done. Is this coincidence, or is it possible that the longliners started targeting shark to pay the bills, now that they dont have the same level of tuna. (Marc)
