In 2012, Park Guide James McGill developed the program, “President Truman: A Class Act,” to help educate students on Truman’s legacy. As part of the NPS Director’s Call to Action, the program has been following students from the third through seventh grades. The group, nicknamed “The Arrowheads” in honor of the NPS logo, is now in its third year. This year’s group spent time with the park’s maintenance staff on May 7, and looked at how landscape and structural management fits into the overall efforts of the NPS to preserve the historic appearance of the president’s yard and house. The park hopes the five-year program will not only familiarize the students with Truman and the national historic site that commemorates him, but also enlighten them that there are many people with a variety of skills working for the National Park Service.
