In 2013, only 76 officers were killed. Of those 76, only 27 were killed as a result of a felonious action by a criminal. The other 49 died as a result of Accidental deaths. 23 of those died in automobile accidents (speeding and running into crap), 9 were accidentally struck by vehicles driving by, 4 died in motorcycle crashes of their own doing, 4 were killed by falling, two accidentally shot themselves, 2 drowned, 1 died in an airplane crash, and 4 died in other types of accidents. Of the 9 that were struck by vehicles, only one of those times was it while the officer was standing next to a car in a traffic stop. The other 8 were while directing traffic. Lets get back to the 27 who were killed as a direct result of being attacked. 6 died as a result of an arrest situation, 5 were ambushed, 5 officers died as a result of investigating suspicious persons, 4 died in domestic disturbance calls, only 4 were killed as a result of a high risk tactical situation, 2 were fatally injured during a chase (most likely shot while chasing, but I could be wrong), and 1 was conducting a search and frisk. Now, lets do some math. If we go with the full death count, that means an officer is killed every 115 hours, not 56. If we go with the REAL number (27 were actually killed by citizens), an officer is killed every 324 hours. Not acceptable by any means, but not as bad as some would have you believe. With over a million (1,001,984 full time officers in 2011, likely more now; does not include part time) officers in our country, an officer has, at worst, a .000076% chance of dying in the line of duty. Yet they use these deaths that rarely happen to convince you that their job is so dangerous and we need to militarize our police. I dont buy it.
