In 2013, our human population was estimated to be 7.125 billion (In my opinion, the only reason 7 billion would ever be an appropriate quantity is to describe the amount of stars in the sky or the amount of money in my bank account). This number is further estimated to DOUBLE (x2...[14.25 billion]) within the next four decades (40 years! Ill be 60!)! With gas emission, deforestation, non-renewable resource consumption, and food shortages becoming more urgent with each passing year (with each baby born), scientists, researchers, and educated populations are making birth control a priority. Although I have some extreme opinions on how to face population control, I believe that oral contraceptives are a great place to start. Having recently dipped my toes into the female oral contraceptive world, and facing the financial, physical, and social factors that accompany oral BC pills, I am very excited to read about the research being conducted in India on MALE oral contraceptives. Below I have attached the links to two relatively-informative articles on the two types of non-hormonal male oral BC pills that are being tested. Im curious, not only as a budding biologist, but also from a societal perspective, how, when released to the male population, these BC pills will affect our population--economically, numerically, and medically. Unfortunately, I cant share the few published journal articles that I have read due to lack of publication rights on Facebook, but from my experience in reading peer-reviewed articles, some great research is being conducted on these reversible, non-hormonal, non-surgical vasectomy pills. For those of you who arent as familiar with how this works anatomically: scientists have developed a styrene polymer (an organic gel-like substance) which blocks the vas deferens (the tube that delivers seminal fluids). After all, isnt it more effective to avoid being shot by unloading a gun rather than firing at a bullet-proof vest? Something to consider!
