In 3 more days my family will celebrate our 19th year anniversary in America :-) 19 years ago on this day I was so nervous about leaving my best friend, my neighbors and neighborhood, and most of all, my grandmother. I didnt know what to expect. I didnt know if I would be accepted or that I would ever learn to speak English. I knew then that my life would be completely changed but I didnt know how. It saddened me when I hear Americans complain about unemployment or the lack of opportunities in todays economy. It saddened me to know that some Americans are so proud to be self-labeled under achievers. It saddened me to hear some Americans claim, the government will take care of me. Yes, these all saddened me because 19 years ago Ive never felt so fortunate to be one of the few to enter a country with unlimited resources and unlimited encouragement to make something of myself. A country that is proud to give helping hands to pull others along so that it continues to be looked at as the land of opportunities by so many other countries. 19 years ago my family came to America with only $50 and no English speaking skills. America gave us (and continues to give us) an unfair advantage to be a homeowner, a business owner, and an investor. Yes, the current economy is not optimum - thats because most Americans have forgotten what this country represents. We are NOT a country full of self-entitlement mentally people. Frankly, I was too busy enjoying all the opportunities that America has offered me in this 19 years that I dont know when the real Americans changed their mentally. Americans: If you have more than $50 and you can speak English, you are so much further ahead than we were. It takes only one person to change your world - let that person be you.
