In 5 days its going to be 67 years since India got rid of the dementing, draining, debilitating British rule. Todays kids know little of the horrors of Jallianwala Bagh or the Great Bengal Famines. Unlike the countries that preserve the stories of the Holocaust in museums and drill horrific stories of concentration camps through textbooks, India likes to philosophise, detoxify and secularise unpleasantness. But I think it is very important to know the truth about the past. Without it, the present has no meaning and the future becomes a repetition of all the mistakes of the past. Here is the first ‘gem’ I picked out from 175 years back in India’s past, which formed the basis of the countrys education system. We must at present do our best to form a class who may be interpreters between us and the millions whom we govern; a class of persons, Indian in blood and colour, but English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect. --- Thomas Babington Macaulay
