In April, the State Archives of Florida accessioned 163 boxes of material from the Department of Environmental Protection documenting the creation, progression and eventual decline of the Cross Florida Barge Canal project. The materials are divided into six distinct series: reports, land records, legal records, administrative files, Canal Land Advisory Council records and Cross Florida Greenway records. The Cross Florida Barge Canal Reports, 1933-2004 (Series S2685), and the Cross Florida Barge Canal Land Records, 1933-1996 (Series S2687), have been completely processed and are easily accessible for research. We are currently arranging and describing the Cross Florida Barge Canal Legal Records, 1935-1991 (Series S2686), and hope to have that series completed by mid-January. This week the archivist tasked with processing the records came across the following document titled “Cross-Florida Barge Canal Case History,” written by the Army Corps of Engineers in April 1971. Though brief, we thought it worth sharing.
