In August of 1994, the Commonwealth Games were held in Victoria, BC, Canada. To mark the event, BC Transit decorated a bus, a 1991 New Flyer D40LF, with a wrap promoting the games and carrying the slogan Catch the Spirit! See this photo on Peter McLaughlins website: busdrawings/Transit/Britishcolumbia/Victoria/8001-8009/8001.jpg In addition, a number of buses were given Spirit-themed nicknames to represent the countries participating in the Games. (The countries that participated are listed on Wikipedia here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Commonwealth_Games ) Most of the branded buses were GM fishbowls and Orion Vs. Fishbowls still made up the lions share of the BCT fleet at that time; the D40LF fleet was still relatively small and there were only ever 11 Orion Vs. Some of the buses given Spirit names continued to carry them for years after the games. 848, for example, a T6H-5307N of which Ive posted photos in this group before, kept its designation Spirit of St. Vincent and the Grenadines right up until it was retired in 2006. 610, an Orion V, retained its designation Spirit of Norfolk Island until at least 2002. Look for photos of BC Transit buses taken anytime from 1994 up to the mid 2000s and youre bound to spot some Spirit names. But I was still a bit surprised when I found this picture that I took during the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, in Squamish, of an old Ford tow truck bearing the designation Spirit of the West. Isnt that a song?
